Do you know where the word bank comes from?

When travellers went into a Norman Castle they would put their money into a terracotta pot or leather bag and put it into a bank (this means they would dig into a bank of land (a bank of land being sloping land down to a river/moat or lake) and hide it. Could there be hidden treasure in the banks of Mountfitchet Castle?

The Norman’s, at a time of siege, would bury their treasure such as gold. Artefacts have been found at the castle such as broaches and daggers. There are rumours that Richard De Montfichet buried a hoard of gold somewhere on the castle site, but unfortunately we haven’t been able to dig to try and find it due to the Castle bring a Grade II listed monument!
