The English Civil Wars were in the middle of the 17th Century between the years 1642-1651. The English Civil Wars were fought between those loyal to the king, Charles I, and those loyal to Parliament, the wars divided the country at all levels of society. At the heart of the conflict were fundamental questions about power and religion. In Civil War times Mountfitchet Castle was besieged, the royalists were inside the castle and Cromwell’s roundheads attacked the castle. In the 1970s lots of Muskett bullets were found here on the castle on this rabbit warren hill. Two of the bullets had pieces of bone found in the lead. It is thought that possibly this is where the prisoners were executed during this besiege. Many times on this spot a ghostly figure, with his hands behind his back, has been seen walking backwards and forwards, perhaps being one of those executed prisoners.
